Clemson Wood Utilization + Design Institute celebrates year of success

Clemson SCKayla Rogers, Wood Utilization + Design Institute – Clemson University’s Wood Utilization + Design Institute (WU+D) recently held its annual event with building industry stakeholders to celebrate 2019 successes and new membership. Hosted at the new Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE) facility on Dec. 11, the event featured a ‘mass timber tour’ showcasing CORE’s beautifully exposed mass timber components – namely, two-story ceilings and an elevator shaft made of Southern yellow pine, cross-laminated timber (CLT). The product was initially developed and tested by Clemson civil engineering students in 2013 thanks to support from WU+D partners.

“We were ecstatic to be able to showcase Clemson’s own mass timber building at this year’s annual event, which represents nearly a decade of work with Southern yellow pine CLT — a very dear, new product to those of us in the south,” said Pat Layton, WU+D director and forestry professor.

WU+D welcomed three new members in 2019, including the Forestry Association of South CarolinaMiTek and Swinerton Mass Timber. Membership in the institute supports research at Clemson that advances sustainable and efficient wood-based solutions for non-residential building construction.
